Center the USER.
Create clearly structured,
predictable, helpful (messages, documentation)
and friendly Interfaces.
Allow for correction of errors.
Give user time to react.
Reward the user.
Think of the user, ask for feedback.
Evaluate with different users.
- Alienation:
isolation, people talk less, loss of social abilities,
tend to expect YES/NO answers hence loose of social patience.
Networking capabilities (e.g, gnu-server),
Interfaces for workgroups, interfaces to
work in teams (CVS,SVN), to organize teams,
on-line GUIs.
- Inequality:
Access to information, education and jobs not for everybody
(just for the rich, young, ..).
Free-Software, tutorials and documentation (on-line books).
Support GNU. No software patents.
No hardware that checks software and reports.
- Personal Powerlessness:
Computer interfaces replace humans ->
no complains possible (versus organizations).
Allow for feedback (call, on-line, chat, mail, etc.).
- Ever changing, complex software:
Software more and more complex, more options,
constantly new versions and new products.
Focus. GUIs in different complexity versions. Incorporate help in GUI.
Improve systems what are there do not start new.
- Dependency:
Computer failure leads to breakdown of company, etc.
Think of backups, alternatives, the error case.
- Private sphere:
Data-security.
Encode. Secure access.
- Loss of jobs:
Expert-systems. Automated printing.
- Loss of Responsibility:
Employees become powerless operators,
take computer failure as excuse,
Take GUI limitation as excuse that something is not
possible,
user relies only on Interface and does not
understand the underlying process anymore.
Give control to the user.
Do not create ignorant users.
Sometimes it is better not to have a GUI.
- Loss of trust in people:
People believe more in the
answer from a computer than in a
human expert.
Report errors, warnings and shortcomings
(e.g.: this may not be the cheapest ticket).
Honestly document limitations of the
software (AI).
